Security is not a product - It's a strategy. While cybersecurity in office environments is a very carefully managed resource, the same doesn't seem to apply to industrial networks. But why this difference?
In an office environment (IT), data security is commonly one of the top three priorities. In an industrial network environment (OT) the #1 priority is uptime. While in IT it is quite common for a virus scanner, to stall a PC-user for a couple of seconds, one could only imagine the detrimental effect of the same situation in an OT-environment. No one can afford machine downtime just because there is a security update every other week.
On the other hand, you might feel constantly bombarded with newscasts about attacks on production networks. Only a couple of months ago, Maersk, the world's biggest shipping company, was attacked by a ransomware attack, named Petya. The breakdown affected all business units at Maersk, including container shipping, oil production, drilling services, and others, the company said.
